Seattle Volleyball Squad Sweeps Hawaii Pacific, 3-0, In Home Opener

SEATTLE, Wash. – Haley Bury (Roy, Wash.) picked up 13 kills without making an attack error and setter Tori Ross (Shoreline, Wash.) earned 37 assists and four service aces to lead the Seattle University volleyball team to a sweep over Hawaii Pacific, 30-26, 30-19, and 30-24, Tuesday evening at the Connolly Center.

The Redhawks jumped out to an 8-2 lead in game one thanks in part to two service aces from Nikole Thompson (Marysville, Wash.). Hawaii Pacific, ranked 13th in the AVCA preseason poll, cut the Seattle lead to one before Bury won three of Seattle’s next six points on kills. A service error by Hawaii Pacific closed out the first game in Seattle’s favor.

Seattle clicked on all cylinders in the second game, as the Redhawks earned 15 kills and three team blocks while making only three attack errors. Bury was successful on seven of her eight kill attempts in the second game, while Thompson picked up four kills and Ross contributed 13 assists and two service aces in the second game alone. Meanwhile, Hawaii Pacific was forced into 11 attack errors while earning only nine kills for a -.044 hitting percentage.

After the intermission, Seattle put the match away by opening up a 20-8 lead, taking advantage of ten attack errors by the Sea Warriors in the third game. With the score 29-19, Hawaii Pacific saved five match points before Thompson finally put the match away with a kill to give the Redhawks their fourth victory in six matches.

Bury finished the match with a .433 hitting percentage, while Thompson contributed nine kills, two service aces, and eight digs. Senior Melissa Mulick (Gaston, Ore.) again led the defense with 21 defensive digs, with Jenny Burrows (Reno, Nev.) picking up four kills and three blocks, Josie Christiansen (Coquille, Ore.) earning four kills and two blocks, and Libby Graff (Beaverton, Ore.) adding five kills and two blocks to the winning effort.

Hawaii Pacific (1-5) was led by Barbara Martin, who compiled 13 kills and 19 digs in the match. Setter Antje Buskies picked up 25 assists, while libero Melissa Sekigawa earned 11 digs from the back row. As a team, the Sea Warriors hit at a .065 hitting percentage and did not pick up a single block in the entire match.

Seattle University (4-2) turns right around for an afternoon match against Hawaii-Hilo tomorrow, Wednesday, August 30, at 1 p.m. at the Connolly Center before heading to Colorado for the weekend to participate in the Colorado School of Mines tournament.

Testing Image Add

Well, it took me awhile to figure out that I had to upload images to the server before I could use them in my entry to Bop's blog. I don't really know how it will turn out. It's a picture of Ambassador that I took a couple months ago. He's 9 years old but as you can see, still more than capable of racing. He won the veteran's competition that day. On the preview, I have a huge gap of blank space but maybe that will go away. Also, I had to make the picture really small, otherwise it got too big for the space. I'm learning, I'm learning. Now, back to my term paper although I have much more fun experimenting with Bop's blog. Love, KC

Tory's Adventure to Morocco

Tory says that her countdown to Morocco is getting short -- 4 days now, and she's off! She departs from Seattle on 9/1 at 615 a.m. and returns 9/22 at 1110 pm.

I have one of Kazan's puppies, Charger, next to me. I have him on a leash so everywhere I go in the house he has to follow. I'm training him to the house so he won't grow up totally uncivilized. By making sure he stays near me all the time, I can make sure he doesn't tear stuff up too much or go potty in the house.

I still can't figure out how to post a picture without losing my message. I'll keep trying.

Lots of love, KC

Joe Jr is off to Iraq

Sandra and I went to Little Joes farwell party, It was sad yet delightful. I sent all our wishes are for his safe tour of duty and safe return. Joe jr is an outstanding young man. (Good Work Joe) Diana I understand you had a run in with a yellow jacket, Its nice to know that they are spreading the love to someone other than myself.

Diana

Diana was really pretty tonight as she got ready to go to the reunion party. Bill will be included for an event tomorrow night.

Today, this morning, I worked for the gleaners. A lady brought in some YELLOW respberries. There was just enough for one family, so since I have a family, I took them home. They was good and tasted just like red raspberries. Some other people donated summer squash. We had boxes and boxes of squash, little white round ones, little green round ones. long pale yellow ones, long pale half yellow half green one, smooth ones, wrinkled ones, boxes and boxes of them. And the squash plants we raised, are also producing squash. Also, the gleaners brought in ears and ears of corn.

There is so much fruit now. The pear tree by the house is beginning to drop the pears, the prune tree is beginning to get ripe prunes, and of course we have strawberries, and grapes, and apples.

Tell Nina I will look for a farm for her. I have in mind a small blue house with a small yard that just might be suitable for a "starter" farm for a girl.

Love to all, Bopcha

FRIDAY

August is almost gone. It has been an eventful month, so far.

Early August was a visit from Sid, Sandra, George, Rosanna, Nina and Alex. Also Bill and Diana. Bill and Diana are here again for a high school reunion (for Diana, Corvallis High School).

It was at Corvallis High School that Diana received a scholarship for four years at Oregon State University.

Jim Tice left me a message on my answering machine that he was going to remove those big logs from the swimming hole. By the time Judi and I drove out there, he was gone, and the logs were on the land. I think I have figured out how they got there. See what you think of the following:

The holding tanks were emptied during the time the water is normally high. This would make the stream even higher. I'm pretty sure the tanks are filled with sediment and have to be cleaned out. Sometimes it has been done in the summer, and a rush of water comes down . I have seen it in the past. If this was done in the winter, it would certainly result in an abnormal flow of water, and hence dislodge those giant logs.

Any comments?

Nina is very sad

Nina broke into tears the other day saying she did not want to be in NJ because it was boring and ugly!! she then called George and asked if they could buy a farm in Oregon. The Kid has good taste.

Psycho Killer Raccoons Terrorize Olympia

By Associated Press

OLYMPIA, Washington - A fierce group of raccoons has killed 10 cats, attacked a small dog and bitten at least one pet owner who had to get rabies shots, residents of Olympia say.

Some have taken to carrying pepper spray to ward off the masked marauders and the woman who was bitten now carries an iron pipe when she goes outside at night.

"It's a new breed," said Tamara Keeton, who with Kari Hall started a raccoon watch after an emotional neighborhood meeting drew 40 people. "They're urban raccoons, and they're not afraid."

Tony Benjamins, whose family lost two cats, said he got a big dog a German Shepherd-Rottweiler mix to keep the raccoons away.

One goal of the patrol is to get residents to stop feeding raccoons and to keep pets and pet food indoors.

Lisann Rolle said she began carrying an iron pipe when she goes outside at night after being bitten by raccoons when she tried to pull three of them off her cat Lucy. She obtained rabies shots afterward as a precaution.

"I was watching her like a hawk, but she snuck out," Rolle said. "Then I heard this hideous sound _ a coyote-type high pitch ... It was vicious. They were focused on ripping her apart."

The attacks have been especially shocking because raccoons came within five feet (1 1/2 meters) of cats without any problem in previous years, Benjamins said.

"We used to love the raccoons. They'd have their babies this time of year, and they were so cute. Even though we lived in the city, it was neat to have wildlife around," he said, "but this year, things changed. They went nuts."

In one case five raccoons tried to carry off a small dog, which managed to survive.

The attacks, all within a three-block area near the Garfield Nature Trail in Olympia, are highly unusual, said Sean O. Carrell, a problem wildlife coordinator with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, adding that trappers may be summoned from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to remove problem animals.

"I've never heard a report of 10 cats being killed. It's something were going to have to monitor," Carrell said.

Meanwhile, residents have hired Tom Brown, a nuisance wildlife control operator from Rochester, Washington, to set traps, but in six weeks he has caught only one raccoon. He and Carrell said raccoons teach their young and each other to avoid traps.

Brown said he had seen packs of raccoons this big but none so into killing.

"They are in command up there," he said.

It's still summer on Poverty Rock

Great news about the bridge! I am really excited. Bill and I will be down this Friday at noon (for my 40th high school reunion - gulp!). I'm sure the bridge won't be installed by then, but hope springs eternal.

Bill and I went to see Night Listener. It is slow paced, but we enjoyed it. It is a psychological thriller and keeps you interested until the end.

Jessica is dying to see Snakes on the Plane. I'm guessing she'll have to go with Aunt Kay - the only other person I know who would consider the movie a "must see."

Noah got his first paycheck and so he and four other Mercer Island bad boys are going to Canada for an overnight visit. Hmmmmm.......

Yesterday, Jessica and I cooked a blackberry dish (a crisp but with sugar cookie dough as a topping). Yum! Yum! I mostly measure ingredients and clean up. She does the rest.

Love to all,

Dee

Thank you, Sid

Tomorrow I shall drive to Harrisburg and look at the Polaris. It sounds so exciting. Maybe they will bring it out to the farm and let me give it a whirl up in the woods.

There is a Philomath firm, Hughes Company, that sent Jim out to look at the trees in the creek. He said they have equipment that could lift them out---no problem. Also, he said he would install the bridge for me!!! I called Charlie and told him I had found someone that could do it, and he said he was SO GLAD that he would not have time to do it at all before the rains come.

I am so glad about the news regarding coffee, Diana.

Dear sweet Tom had a birthday today. I used to be that age. He has a lot of living ahead of him.

Sid, I was surprised at the reviews of the Kubota. I have seen the Polaris advertised and will certainly go to Harrisburg and look at them.

Love to all the readers of this log. Wish me luck in my endeavors. Bopcha

Bopcha you are so wise!!!!

Polaris Ranger XP .. seems to be the right choice

Price: $10,799

THE RANGER XP is equipped with a 700cc, twin-cylinder, electronic fuel-injected engine and will tow 1,750 lbs. or carry 1,500 lbs. in the cargo box. In terms of ride, both loaded and empty, the Ranger's suspension was its most significant advantage. The Ranger has 4-wd but can go places in 2-wd that other machines don't dare to tread in 4-wd mode.

Overall, the Ranger came out on top largely because of its strength across all categories, outperforming the competition at both work and play. For example, Tom Henry named the Ranger as his favorite of all the UVs. “I liked the composite box and lift dump,” he said, “and I loved the 41-mph top speed.”

However, a few of the farmers had suggestions for improvement: “The pedals are too close to the seat and too close together for people wearing boots,” Clark McPheeters said. “The turning radius could be tighter; throttle input in the corners and disengaging the rear differential lock and 4-wd helped a great deal.”

Strengths: The machine does start everytime I get on it. The dump bed is great it was one of the things that sold me on the machine.

Weaknesses: Too much engine noise. Hard to shift in and out of gear. The big weakness it won't pull itself up any hill especially if I have anything loaded in the bed. I have pulled this machine out of more places than I thought possible. I have never seen a wheel spin on the machine.

Overall: I wish I had the money and Kubota had the machine. They missed the reason for building this thing. Buy a striped down jeep if you need to go off road.

Strengths: In the woods this machine is a beast! The power steering is the best when in tight places, and the hdy. dump is as good as it gets. I bought the camo verson, 2005. I use mine in the NC mountains a lot and so far I have not needed the winch.

Weaknesses: Hills it does not like. Top end speed is poor in high gear 20MPH, 27MPH going down hill, 10MPH going up hill in med gear. Kubota should do better. The fuel and the oil guage do fog up but are still readable. The RTV needs more get up and go power.

Overall: This is still the machine to have. The power steering and hdy dump makes the machine.

Strengths: Always starts immediately and is ready to go. Once I changed the hydro filters the "issue" of the transmission shifting difficulty went away. Also, Kubota provided me with an updated yoke that stopped the drive shaft rattle. The RTV has a very fast cycle to the dump bed. I thought power steering would be only a gimmick, but it's great!

Weaknesses: I don't understand why Kubota cannot manage to get fuel and temp gauges that do not fog over. I have exactly 6 sets of gauges; they all fog over. I gave up on this issue since I can still manage to read them. I assume Kubota did the same (shame on them - this would be, what, a $5 fix?!) Now that I have almost 3 years on mine (I bought one of the very first units out), it has panned out to be a very reliable workhorse. The "worksite" tires may be durable on a worksite, but they are a joke in anything slippery. Mine have been on a shelf for over 2 years now. I have Bighorn tires on it now and I am EXTREMELY pleased with their performance, which brings me to my final point. I wish Kubota would offer a larger engine or a turbo option to get more power. With the weight and strength of the RTV, more power would certainly be welcomed.

Overall: I've owned several (4) different UV's, and I like the RTV best overall.

Model Year: 0

Implements:Winch

Purchased From: Kubota Dealer

Strengths: Smooth steering, transmission and ride. Nice powerful quiet diesel that is good on fuel. Great hydro dump. Sturdy design.

Weaknesses: Worksite model tires are a joke. Fuel and temp gauges fog over and are hard to read. Replacement gauges also fog over, but they have the added change of not even working as well as fogging over. Until after the first transmission oil filters and fluid are changed at about 10 hours, the transmission is difficult to get out of gear.

Overall: Several first year bugs. Kubota Corporation itself has been very disappointing in their willingness to quickly correct or even access problems. For example, 3 months to get tires that didn't go flat (ended up replacing them myself with a different brand), I found out on the internet that the Kubota owner's manual lists the oil capacity at over 33 percent too low (Kubota has still never bothered to inform their owners!), over 6 months waiting on gauges that work...still waiting! It will eventually be a great unit and likely tops in it's catagory. I sort of now wish I would have waited for the 2nd year model before I purchased.

Strengths: Someone listed the RTV in the wrong catageory. Its not a Kart, its a tractor. I traded an old "Haul Master" utlility kart for an RTV. Its almost wrong to even compare the two. The RTV's hydrostatic transmission gives it worlds more pulling power than a CTV. I also like how it holds back on hills.

Weaknesses: The hydrostatic transmission reacts like a tractor, when you let off it comes to a rather quick stop. It took me awhile to learn the touch of the pedal. At first its difficult to drive smoothly. I was not a fan of the standard dump bed, i think the system to dump it is a pain in the butt. Thats why I went with the work site.

Overall: I really can't complain. The RTV is almost a no brainer. I looked at the Cub Cadet and Gator's as well. (Why anyone would buy a Gator is beyond me?) They both priced out around $8000. The base RTV at about 1500 more is money well spent.

Coffee could be a health drink

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

By NICHOLAS BAKALAR

THE NEW YORK TIMES

Coffee is not usually thought of as health food, but a number of recent studies suggest that it can be a highly beneficial drink. Researchers have found strong evidence that coffee reduces the risk of several serious ailments, including diabetes, heart disease and cirrhosis of the liver.

Among them is a systematic review of studies published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, which concluded that habitual coffee consumption was consistently associated with a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes. Exactly why is not known, but the authors offered several explanations.

Coffee contains anti-oxidants that help control the cell damage that can contribute to the development of the disease. It is also a source of chlorogenic acid, which has been shown in animal experiments to reduce glucose concentrations.

Caffeine, perhaps coffee's most famous component, seems to have little to do with it; studies that looked at decaffeinated coffee alone found the same degree of risk reduction.

Larger quantities of coffee seem to be especially helpful in diabetes prevention. In a report that combined statistical data from many studies, researchers found that people who drank four to six cups of coffee a day had a 28 percent reduced risk compared with people who drank two or fewer. Those who drank more than six had a 35 percent risk reduction.

Some studies show that cardiovascular risk also decreases with coffee consumption. Using data on more than 27,000 women ages 55 to 69 in the Iowa Women's Health Study who were followed for 15 years, Norwegian researchers found that women who drank one to three cups a day reduced their risk of cardiovascular disease by 24 percent compared with those drinking no coffee at all.

But as the quantity increased, the benefit decreased. At more than six cups a day, the risk was not significantly reduced.

The findings, which appeared in May in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that anti-oxidants in coffee may dampen inflammation, reducing the risk of disorders related to it, such as cardiovascular disease.

In another analysis, published in July in the same journal, researchers found that a typical serving of coffee contains more anti-oxidants than typical servings of grape juice, blueberries, raspberries and oranges.

These same anti-inflammatory properties may explain why coffee appears to decrease the risk of alcohol-related cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Still, some experts believe coffee drinking, and particularly caffeine consumption, can have negative health consequences. A study published in January in The Journal of the American College of Cardiology, for example, suggests that the amount of caffeine in two cups of coffee significantly decreases blood flow to the heart, particularly during exercise at high altitude.

Rob van Dam, a Harvard scientist and the lead author of The Journal of the American Medical Association review, acknowledged that caffeine could increase blood pressure and slightly increase levels of the amino acid homocysteine, possibly raising the risk for heart disease. "I wouldn't advise people to increase their consumption of coffee in order to lower their risk of disease," van Dam said.
