Art by Nina

My sister has her won personal graphic artist for her art school and she is free. Her name is Nina. If you click on the website you can see her latest creation for the Winter class schedule.

The drawing is called "Sledding by Night" I think the drawing that you see under the "birthday party" category is also hers but I have to confirm that. I am not totally sure.

Phones don't like us anymore

Hello Everyone,

Isn't is crazy with our phone situation. My cell phone and our home phone broke down at the same time. The other night I said to Sid, I hope neither of us have a medical emergency tonight because we sure won't be able to call for help. Thankfully, we both made it. Well now I have a new phone and I am slowly trying to put all my numbers back in. What an ordeal.

Great drawing by Noah. I had no idea he had so much artistic ability. That can not be the first drawing he has ever done. So he must have a lot more for the family to admire :-)

Aren't the puppies adorable? KC and Tom, you are so lucky to be able to hold so many little puppies all the time. That is really great. Nina and Alex would be in heaven if they got to hold all those puppies. By the way, oh god here I go --being the annoying aunt and bragging about my niece and nephew. But I just have to let you know that Alex is quite the "gentleman" (at his ripe age of six). He is always looking out for his big sister. He tries to protect her from getting in trouble with Mommy and Daddy. He consistently defends his"bratty big sister's" behavior. Whatever he has for himself he always makes sure Nina also has it. He is good at sharing it seems. Well that is the behavior for now, perhaps it will change as he gets a little older and gets to "know everything." I think it's a well known fact that when you get to be about 14-15 years of age, you know everything right? To all you parents, you would know a lot more about that then I would.

The other thing I need to brag about is Nina's horseback riding. She ended her riding lessons with a competition. Apparently, she got the award for best control and best performance in trotting. She was so proud of herself and needless to say we were all very proud of her too. She still gets made fun of in school but not as much. Although the other day, she got made fun of in gym class because she was wearing a T-shirt with little horses. I guess that is not cool enough in the "high fashion" world of 5th grade. It irks me to no end, but I suppose that is the way of the world or the world of New Jersey public schools - again with no experience I have no idea what is normal.

Anyway, Phila is an exciting place right now with the anticipation of the Eagles victory on Sunday. We shall see!

We are are having very cold weather here right now - temperatures way below freezing. I can't wait to just get home and get under my nice warm blankets. By the way, I have been working with Sid to try and accept that he is adopted. Just kidding. All things aside, you guys are a pretty good family to end up with as an adopted child.

Judy, I am still really enjoying the goat's milk products you sent me. With my dry skin, it is such a delight.

Hope you are all well.

Love,

Sandra

What did that phone ever do to you, Sid and Sandra?

Why oh why did you kill your telephone?

The 18th of Jan is Bill's 60th birthday, so the kids and I are taking him to the San Juans (the Elements Hotel at Friday Harbor (360) 378-4000) for the long weekend. We are leaving Friday afternoon and coming home late on Monday, January 19th.

Love,

Dee

Nice drawing Noah!

Just a reminder our phone is dead over here so if you need to contact me use skype. Bopcha make sure you have signed on to skype when you start your computer so I can call you.

Love Sid

Tree down-oh my goodness!

There must have been a terrific wind.

The weather report today said clear in Eastern Oregon and continued fog in our Willamette Valley. I will try to go for a walk in the woods at the farm sometime this week to look for damage. Also, this Wednesday is Repak!

KC is home with Durango. I am looking forward to seeing a picture of him on his new home turf.

Tom, you are such a handsome guy. I am looking forward to more pictures of you.

Love, Bopcha

Limbs down - Sigh!

Yesterday, Bill discovered that two of the three or four trunks to this tree had simply broken off at their base. This is the biggest one.

On its way down, the tree took out a branch from a nearby aspen.

Here's the base of the tree. Hmmmm... how in the world did that happen?

Noah's Drawing

I couldn't get my scanner to get the whole picture in, so poor Obama's head is partially deleted. Anyway, Noah drew this picture.

No go re: Corvallis

I-5 is flooded by Chehalis, so we won't be going to CVO this weekend. The routes around the 20 mile closure are very iffy, as they are getting flooded also.

Sigh!

well, maybe Bill and I can ride our bikes on Saturday.

Love,

Dee

Kay plans on coming, too!

Kay confirmed that:

(1) her current firm wants to employ her on Thursdays and Fridays after her retirement;

(2) she will also fill in as needed for sick and vacationing employees; and

(3) she is coming to Corvallis with us.

I just had fetal pig cells implanted in my jaw.

If I start snorting and rooting in the mud, just ignore me.

Love,

Dee

Little Delta is my favorite!

She is adorable! If I weren't such a confirmed cat person (for the Mercer Island chapter of our lives, anyway), I would snatch her up in a heartbeat.

Dee

Homes for Humanity

Charity homes built by Hollywood start to crumble

John Harlow in Los Angeles

RESIDENTS of a model housing estate bankrolled by Hollywood celebrities and hand-built by Jimmy Carter, the former US president, are complaining that it is falling apart.

Fairway Oaks was built on northern Florida wasteland by 10,000 volunteers, including Carter, in a record 17-day “blitz” organised by the charity Habitat for Humanity.

Eight years later it is better known for cockroaches, mildew and mysterious skin rashes.

A forthcoming legal battle over Fairway Oaks threatens the reputation of a charity envied for the calibre of its celebrity supporters, who range from Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt to Colin Firth, Christian Bale and Helena Bonham Carter.

The case could challenge the bedrock philosophy behind Habitat for Humanity, claiming that using volunteers, rather than professional builders, is causing as many problems as it solves.

April Charney, a lawyer representing many of the 85 homeowners in Fairway Oaks, said she had no problems taking on Habitat for Humanity, despite its status as a “darling of liberal social activists”. She said the charity should have told people that part of the estate had been built on a rubbish dump.

One man pulled up his floorboards to find rubbish 5ft deep under his kitchen. Other complaints include cracking walls and rotting door frames that let in rats and ants. Many residents have complained of mildew and mysterious skin rashes.

One resident said her children were suffering from skin complaints. “The intentions are good, but when the politicians and big-shot stars have left we’re stuck with the consequences. This house looks pretty but inside it either stinks or sweats,” she said.

Judy Hall, the charity’s local development director, said recently that it had been dealing with about 30 complaints. She added that skilled work was carried out by professionals.

Some residents dismiss their neighbours’ worries. Diennal Fields, 51, said people did not know how to look after their homes: “It’s simple stuff: if there is mildew, don’t get a lawyer, get a bottle of bleach.”

Puppies?

The puppies are BIG! Thank you for sharing with me. Love, Bopcha
