Murray and Marys

Murray hiked to the top of Marys Peak yesterday. He took the Northside trail which takes off from the Woods Creek road.

The Woods Creek road takes off from the Newport highway. The total hike was thirteen miles. Murray said the trail was well defined and there was snow on the top. He is a responsible hiker, and was well equipped for any hazards he might encounter.

That is my news for yesterday. Love, BoPcHa

G-T item

The friends and family of Emily Mae Smith are holding a benefit concert Saturday to help defray funeral expenses and for

smith's l8 month old child. Emily Smith is the daughter of Rick Smith, the bass player for the group Fate 55. The group is planning to perform a benefit concert from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Peacock Bar and Grill.

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is pretty low key out here. In Chicago, they used to dye the Chicago River green and nobody worked after the noon hour - they were too busy watching the parade and drinking green beer.

The sun is shining, but it doesn't fool me. It is cold outside and the minute you think otherwise, a big gust of wind comes and freezes your socks off!

Kay is still unsure whether the house deal will go through. The electrical box needed to be replaced, so she offered the buyer a credit which the buyer accepted. Now the appraisal takes place, and if all goes well, they can schedule the closing.

Gulp!

Dee

Good Movie

Bill and I saw "Crossing Over" with Harrison Ford over the weekend. It is about immigration, and is really good - not heavily political, and shows a bit of the complexity of immigration issues. Good acting, mostly, and inspiring in many ways.

The wind and rain really pounded on us this weekend. Our lawn will be knee high before we can mow it!!!

Kay's house deal is still in the works. The buyers are sending another electrician out today to double check on something.

Jess had a wonderful time in Palm Desert. She has a delightful tan! I bought Noah a burger Friday afternoon. He was delightful to be around and it is such a joy to see a skinny boy eat!

Love,

Dee

T.G.I.F.

Jessica and Gavin come home tonight. They will be tanned, relaxed, and broke.

Noah is facing finals next week. Gulp!

It is a beautiful, chilly day today.

Update on Emily's accident

Charges brought in ATV death

Lincoln County sheriff: Lebanon man intoxicated at time of crash

Nicholas James Estrada of Lebanon is facing charges in the death of a 20-year-old woman who died when the ATV they were riding crashed March 5 near Toledo.

Estrada, 25, was arraigned Monday in Lincoln County Circuit Court on charges of first-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants and other related offenses.

The crash occurred around 3:24 a.m. near the 300 block of Schlect Road west of Toledo.

Emily Mae Smith, also of Lebanon, died at the scene.

According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Estrada was operating the four-wheel ATV when it went off the road and down an embankment, landing about 35 feet from the road.

Both Estrada and Smith were thrown from the vehicle. Smith died at the scene and Estrada was taken to the Newport hospital.

Officers detected signs of impairment when they spoke with Estrada, and his blood alcohol level was determined to be 0.19 percent, according to the sheriff’s office.

After his release from the hospital on Friday, Estrada was lodged in the Lincoln County jail.

Thursday March 05, 2009, 8:12 PM

A woman died and a man was hospitalized after an all-terrain vehicle crashed early today in Toledo, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office reported.

Deputies responded about 3:25 a.m. to the 300 block of Schlecht Road, said Deputy Abby Dorsey, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

Emily Mae Smith, 20, of Lebanon, a passenger on the ATV, was found dead about 35 feet off the roadway.

The ATV operator, Nicholas James Estrada, 25, of Lebanon, was injured and appeared impaired, Dorsey said.

Estrada was taken to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital in Newport. Hospital officials declined to release his condition.

Oregon State Police troopers and Lincoln City and Newport police assisted in the investigation, which is continuing.

With the C chord you can add some flavor by

adding the pinkie to the 3rd fret of high e string during some

of your strums.

CAGED

Under great pressure from Sid, I picked up my new guitar (aka "Dolly") last night and practiced for about 5 minutes. My left hand fingers were so tender, I could not do more. I did manage to go thru all of the notes in the word "Caged," however. I think it's time to book my performance at Carnegie Hall!

SNOW!

We had a good trip to Corvallis. Bopcha, Judi, Kay, Bill and I were all there at once! It was fun.

We had snow on the ground this morning and it is snowing off and on as I write (I am at work). Not enough to cause too many problems with our drive from the south end of the Island, but snow nevertheless. I am really hankering for spring!

The three cats are doing well together. We have given up trying to feed them separately. They are way more interested in what the other cats are eating than they are in their own food.

We watched the second half of a documentary of Bob Dylan last night. He really seems like a nice guy! I've always liked his music, but I had no idea that I would like him as a person. There were some clips of him singing with Johnny Cash that were really cool.

Sandra, I wish I had a coffee shop outside of my door right now ... I could use a double dose of caffeine!

Love,

Dee

Palm Desert

Jessica and Gavin just landed in Palm Desert, where it is 68 degrees at ten in the morning. Jess has the cutest dress for the wedding. Most notable is the fact that the back zipper is long and fully exposed - as if you were looking at the inside, not the outside. I thought she had it on inside out. Very strange, but cute.

Yesterday, Noah stopped by my office to give me his W-2 form from Niketown. He looked well, and allowed me to take him to the grocery store to buy him some groceries. He has finals in another week and then he is off to Arizona and Los Angeles with his buddies for a week.

There was frost this morning, and we may get snow this weekend. Brrrrr...... I am very anxious for Spring to arrive.

We leave for Corvallis tomorrow morning.

Love,

Dee

PS The plumbing bill was only $300. See, if you expect the worst, then even $300 seems reasonable!

Dogs

Sandra, the dogs belong to Sister Kay. They are her chiwowwowas.

She brought them down for Judi to take care of while she is in California. She has had them a number of years and they are house dogs and very noisy and protective. When I read your question about the dogs I had to laugh because the things we take for granted because we have known about them for so long, we don't stop to explain more fully what we are talking about. I said "we" I meant myself.

Love, Bopcha
