Stopsky's closed by minor fire over the weekend

The Mercer Island Fire Department responded to an electrical fire at Stopsky's Delicatessen on 78th Avenue S.E. on Sunday morning, May 22.

The fire started underneath the espresso machine around 7:30 a.m.

"The people at the scene tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher and did a pretty good job of trying to stop it, but needed additional help from the fire department," said Battalion Chief Les Kenworthy.

Three Mercer Island units came to the scene and remained for about 30 minutes.

Damage was minimal, but Stopsky's will be closed temporarily this week as the espresso machine is replaced and extensive cleaning is completed. According to owner Jeff Sanderson, the restaurant expects to open by Friday.

We got rid of two stands of scotch broom this trip. Sort of like digging cactus at KC and Tom's ranch!

Beavers meet Huskies

Tonight, Bill and I and JB and Gavin and Noah and Katie are all going to the Beaver/Husky baseball game at Safeco field (the professional baseball stadium). The #2 in the nation Beavers should win. However, having said that, I am still nervous.

Tomorrow I will head to the farm and return on Monday.

Disaster Planning

Between our Mother's Day AKC Lure Coursing Test and Trial and jammed phone lines (I couldn't believe it--I haven't gotten that "...please try your call another time" for years), I neglected to send MD wishes to any but the mothers that happened to be at the trial. Not bad company, but it sure made me wish that one of them was mine. Seeing the picture of Judi at Bop's grave -- well hard to see. Usually I just pretend she's somewhere else, not to worry. Tough when reality strikes. Pushing it back right now.

What a cutie Noah's girl is. Love the looks of her laugh. Of course, Noah is unbearably handsome too.

I'm sure you all are aware that Tom, the 'zois, and I will marching in the direction of the farm should disaster strike. We'll have the numbers to take over almost any place at the farm, so you'd better watch out Kay!!!

Love, KC

Monday

Sounds like Philadelphia has its traffic issues.

Can any of you runners/walkers suggest some good shoes for walking. I walk the dogs every day and when I return it is hard to walk because the bottom of my feet feel bruised. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a very new great granddaughter - Audriana Nicole Hunter. Audriana joins a brother and sister. I emailed a picture to the sibs. So tomorrow, I go mail the baby gift (my traditional crocheted baby blanket).

A Lovely Mother's Day

Hello Mothers and Sisters,

I hope all of you had a wonderful Mother's Day. The weather here was picture perfrect. It was really sunny, breezy, not hot but warm from the sun. My sister and I took my mother to a restaurant for a really nice relaxing lunch. The kids were not around - they went to their grandmother's beach house with George to clean up the shore house and get it ready for the summer. My sister was not complaining about the hiatus from the kids and actually welcomed the "adult outing." Not that Alex and Nina are not completely entertaining.

We had much more ambitous goals for Mother's day but because the traffic was so horrendous, traveling took 3X the normal time so we made major changes to our plans. We were going to take my mother to the Art Museum to see an exhibit of an artist named Carpaccio who does some sort of transformative art to fashion - I can't quite explain it but if I do end up seeing it perhaps I can say more about it, not likely but I can always try to babble something. With my mother being in the clothes making business, we thougth she would enjoy it. My mother said she had heard that the pieces in his show were not really "wearable" to which my sister responded, '..and how would that be different than other pieces that fashion designers create?" How true right? I will occassionally glance over "Vogue" magazines if they are in the gym and I am always amazed at how crazy and unwearable the clothes are, I guess they are designing with Lady Gaga in mind. By the way, I happen to catch her on TV one day and could tolerate about five minutes of her. She offends me. I know she has her talents???? so they tell me, but I actually find myself bored by her outrageousness.

Anyway, because of the chaos and traffic in Philadelphia we ended up resorting to a quiet lunch and then going to the "Aerosole" shoe store nearby to get some much needed shoes. You know when you reach that state that if you don't soon buy shoes you will be relegated to walking barefoot. :-) :-)

Sundays in Phila during the Spring or Summer are quite challenging as there is always a major outdoor event which creates lots of travelers spreading all over the roads. Speaking of events, last weekend I completed the Broad Street Run, which is apparently one of the most popular 10-miler runs in the country. There were 30,000 runners registered (no I did not add extra zeros). Amazing isn't it? The most inspiring part is that even with all those crowds, it all really works and is very organized with runners and on-lookers all supporting each other. It was the first year I did it, and I really loved it.

At the starting line you are just overwhelmed with a sea of people and that pretty much continues throughout the entire race. They start different groups at different times, but when you get to the starting line, there was the Mayor Nutter off to the side giving people "high fives" and the "Rocky" music starts. I guess that is the perfect tune to demonstrate Philly pride. Anyway, my friend and I finished the run doing about 10 minute miles. I don't think that is considered super athletic but it is okay. I am just happy we finished. It felt so good and it wasn't as painful as I thought it might be which I think is because it is all relatively flat road.

I am happy to hear about everyone's adventures and life on the farm. I hear that Murray is embarking on the art of bread making. I think bread is my favorite food in the universe. I would definitely be stopping by to sample if I lived nearby. Diana, you will have to give us a full report. And I guess you will know exactly when they open since you have been watching so closely. :-)

Diana, by the way I guess one should follow you around in determining where to live. I mean here you are living between two highly rated places: Mercer Island and Corvallis. Does it get any better?

I don't think anyplace I ever lived rated high in any category. They say that Univ. of Penn is one of the best places to work in Philadelphia. Hmmmm.....let's see I haven't seen an increase in two years and have never worked so hard in my life...........Huh??? Seriously, UPenn is not such a bad place to work, it definitely has its perks.

I will write again soon- that is my goal. Good wishes to all of you. We will be seeing Kay and Judy very soon.

Love,

Sandra

Saturday

One of my neighbors had some form of dementia and recently apparently got lost - so his kids were moving things out of his trailer today. My neighbor said he is going into an assisted living facility. Another husband possibility down the tubes.

Went out to the farm today to feed geese and cat. Geese alive but the eggs are now getting eaten as soon as they are laid. Did not see the turkeys.

Of course Corvallis is the safest place to be. We expect to see you out at your farm when the big one hits all the other states. Judi and I will have dinner ready because the farm is a lot closer to us than you. HA. We may even prepare our famous goose dinner and perhaps shove an apple in its mouth like a pig. Also in lieu of goose we just might go to the creek and catch some trout and/or maybe a turkey. You may own the farm but remember he who gets to the farm first, gets the best bed. Sorry Sid and Sandra - that would be my body stretching in comfort.

Diana good picture of you and Bill. Was glad to get a glimpse of Noah girlfriend. If Jess won't get married, perhaps at some point, we can coerce Noah into having his wedding in Hawaii. (I know Bill, I can hear you grumbling from here - NOT FOR ANOTHER 10 YEARS and THEN you may push Judi and I in our wheelchair built for two with a side car holding my two ancient dogs.)

This will be our firm Mother's Day without Bop so not a good one. I plan on going to the cemetary tomorrow to visit for awhile.

Saturday Morning

Another day of drizzle. The lawn is really happy about it, as are those pesky weeds.

I start on a new experimental glaucoma regimen on Monday. If I qualify (as if there is any doubt!), I have to put drops in my eyes THREE times a day. Grrrrrrr..... The last experiment I was in I only had to do them once a day, and that was hard enough. Oh well, what a woman won't do to advance science!

I am headed to the farm a week from today. I can't leave on Friday because we got tickets to the first game of the three-game series between Oregon State (#1 in the Pac 10 so far -- baseball) and the University of Washington. After a dismal basketball season, the Beavs owe me a stunning win over those obnoxious Huskies.

Kay, I saw a Lifetime movie last night that took place in Kingman, of all places! Pretty stark looking, but it was fun to see where Randy's little ranch used to be.

The kids are celebrating Mother's Day today. I don't know what is in store, but I'm certain it involves tasty food.

Can't wait for Stopsky's to open. I check on it constantly. They probably think I am preparing to rob it!

Love,

Dee

Corvallis was ranked #1 in the Nation as best place to live!

Where to Live to Avoid a Natural Disaster

Weather disasters and quakes: who’s most at risk? The analysis below, by Sperling’s Best Places, a publisher of city rankings, is an attempt to assess a combination of those risks in 379 American metro areas. Risks for twisters and hurricanes (including storms from hurricane remnants) are based on historical data showing where storms occurred. Earthquake risks are based on United States Geological Survey assessments and take into account the relative infrequency of quakes, compared with weather events and floods. Additional hazards included in this analysis: flooding, drought, hail and other extreme weather. Intro Text » | Printable PDF » | More on the Tornados »
