Chaos Reigns

Hello All,

Diana thanks for recognizing how patient we are, but I am not so sure you can continue to classify us as "patient" anymore. Let's describe our patience, Sid and I walking around the house feeling completely overhwelmed, sighing, whining (that's mostly me) and feeling cranky and annoyed. Well let's see, does walking around the house sighing, and talking about dreading all the clean up we will have to do after the contractors

Hello All,

I had much more to report about our colors issues and other related things. Unexpectedly, I lost a connection when I was writing and could not finish my message which would have been undoubtedly too long and boring.

The kitchen project is very slow and living with a non-functional issue, boxes, dust and generally a big huge mess is getting a bit "passe" now. Our poor kitties seem to be perpetually covered in dust and do we dare imagine what else. I guess the old adage about adding 75% cost and time to any home project really is true.

As far as colors, Sid and I have now embarked on a color scheme for the kitchen etc.... that is "philadelphia historic." It is not necessarily a choice we would make on our own but my very forward New Yorker friend insists that we need to take our colors down a few degrees to match the historical conservative quality of the place.

Hmmm, I guess that is right, who know. I think we still love vibrant colors, but I personally can see the beauty in either bright or subdued colores. For example, Judy your colors in the Corvallis home are looking quite stylish. I love that chair - the fabric is striking. Where are those book shelves from. They look great and exactly what we've been looking for. Any interest in shipping them over? Hee Hee!!

KC, I agree that Tory's jacket looks really cool and very Colorodo! She looks so sparkly and happy in those photos. I really need to get back to my 400 things at work, but I really wanted to just say hello and explain why my last message ended so abruptly.

Thanks for sending pictures over - keep them coming. Judy, I hope you had a wonderful birthday. You deserve the best!

Love to all,

Sandra

Kitchen Project Continues

Hello All,

Well Kay and KC you may think that your choice of nuetral colors is uncourageous or boring but actually seems that such a choice would indicate how sophisticated you are. Unlike Sid and I who have such a hodge podge of colors - that after looking at for so many years seem almost childish. I mean seriously a green living room, an orange bathroom, not to mention the purple bathroom. KC, I like your idea of introducing colors with various pieces that "live" in the room. With our decorating scheme, you just have to be really open minded and search deep for how everything is pieced together. One thing I don't mind doing is laughing at myself.

Thank goodness I can do that especially when one of my friends comes over to "assist" us with the colors

The Irish Connection

Hello Family,

Hope all is well with everyone. Sid and I are doing well and living in a bit of a "shipwreck" at the moment. We

are giving a much needed facelift to our kitchen. After many years of living in a red (intensely red) kitchen we have decided to change the color, put in a new floor and rehab the cabinets. A good friend of mine who has been to "hell and back" with rennovating a really old home, recommended an Irish contractor for our kitchen project. So each day two cheery Irish guys show up, Shane and Victor and work on our disaster zone.

Don't know about any of you but contractors in Philly are not easy to trust. We have been bamboozled and disappointed so many times. In contrast, the Irish team is quite a pleasure to work with. And not to mention that we could listen to them talk all day long - love their Irish accents. They work really hard and are very respectful and not pushy. They have had to deal with indecision between Sid and I for weeks now. I think we have been through ten different decisions just about the floor.

Judy, I was ready to contact you several times about color, flooring etc.... but I thought I would spare you the chaotic state of things.

Eternal Snow

Hello Everyone,

I also have not had much time to write in even though I intended to many times. Snow is becoming a constant in our lives here in Philadelphia. It seems like every other day there is something snow-related happening. It is interfering with people's ability to get to work, be on time, etc... Sid and I have the blessings of being able to walk to work. On the other hand we don't get to ever use the excuse of snow as a reason not to show up or to get to work on time. What fun is that. I mean really what good is the snow if it can't be the ultimate excuse for not doing what you are supposed to do. Our car is still buried in the snow and I don't know when we will be moving it. It needs to be cleaned and shoveled out. I will volunteer Sid for that job, do you think he might be interested?

Thanks KC for the recognition of the wonderful hand2paw program. And yes Sid will be "judged" on whether he volunteers for the program. I will have to convince him. The program is actually picking up lots of good PR at Penn and they are talking about it going national. Although there are probably identical programs around the country, but they are just not publicized.

The Parsons have moved to their new house. Kay, thanks for asking about the move and I think it went okay, or should I say as well as can be expected for a family that has as much "stuff" as they do and lived in a 6000 square feet house. My sister was willing to just get a dumpster and throw out 85% of what they own. But she wasn't allowed to do that. Seems that they just can't seem to clear out the old house. There is lots of stuff that remained and needs to be cleared. It is still a work in progress. I think there have been several trips to the old house to clean it out. It seems rather endless. They sure are funny and my sister and I get a lot of laughs about how crazy that family is. But I wouln't have it any other way. Alex and Nina really like the new school. They are amazed at how nice everyone has been. It looks like other kids really like them and I am sure they are enjoying that. Can you believe that they actually told their parents not to pack ANY junk food for lunch because all the kids in teh school eat healthy food. Not that my sister really fed them much junk food, but I guess they are now living by an even higher standard of healthy food. Of course, George and Rossana have no complaints about that. But the morale of the Parsons moving story is " Don't ever move." My sister said it is an absolute nightmare. It really seems like it gets harder as you accumulate more stuff. I know that this family is very experienced in moving and probably quite good at it. So feel free to laugh at us Mancinis' who can't seem to move everything out of a house in one giant swoop.

Little dog Storm is adjusting. He was very confused the first few days and seemed quite nervous - poor little guy. He is okay now and I think he is enjoying all the walks among the pretty trees that are in the neighborhood. I guess he is just happy to have all his family around him. What more could he ask for? By the way, the current house is in a much more scenic location now. Of course there is no comparison to the scenery that all of you are living in but for us Philadelphians, their location looks pretty good.

KC, I am sorry to hear that your dog has the heart issue, is the racing career over or is there some way to continue. I am sure that was really disappointing for you, and I know you are sad for him.

I hope you are all having a nice winter season. What is going on in the NW with rain, are you getting lots of it?

That would be pretty tough to have constant rain, although I think I could adjust if it were not heavy rains.

I do find rain refreshing, I just don't like downpours like we have here on the East Coast.

Take good care everyone,

Love,

Sandra

Bragging About the Vet School

Among the many wonderful things we do, here is a really neat program from one of the interns at Vet. I think you will find the video inspiring. I am sending Sid out to the program immediately to help out :-)

I am actually thinking about joining the cause myself and helping. Always great to see the animal-human bond in action.

Human Animal Bond/Animal Assisted Therapy Independent Study Class, Rachel Cohen presented her program called hand2paw which brings homeless kids from Covenant House into shelters to work with shelter dogs - it is a really impressive program -

No Eeeks Necessary

Diana, believe I can understand the error with the date. You should see the crazy dates I am writing, especially since it is still only January. Yesterday, I requested to have a data report on some employee turnover rates for the one year. They asked me to specify the dates and I wrote

1/1/2010 to 1/10/2010. That was impressive to everyone I am sure.

We are getting ready for another snow storm. I will have to go out and get a shovel to plow out the car. This is really getting to be a regular event.

Got to get back to work. Hope everyone is well. By the way, Diana I loved the way you described what "seattlites" do when they are ripping with excitment. That was really funny.

Love,

Sandra

Buster Rest In Peace

Wow, poor little Buster. Sid and I are really sorry to hear about him passing away. But he is now in good hands with Bopcha keeping him on the right path. And of course all the Zoiboyz will be making sure he is having lots of fun in heavan.

Diana my only confusion is if he died in 2005, why are you just now telling us ;

Wow, KC those pictures are amazing. The farm looks stunning as always. The pastry looks as if there are about 25 layers, so what yummy filling sits between all those layers? And I think you are mistaken about the caloric makeup of that cake. To me it looks like a "Weight Watchers" advertisement - you know the one about moderation.

We got some more snow here in Philly and traveling was once again inhibited. Yesterday, we were supposed to be going to the Pocono (Mountains area) to help Joe make sausages, but the snow got the better of us. So in the end, Joe had to depend on his other sausage-making experts. Our expertise couldn't be utilized. Well ....Just kidding.

The Parsons are getting ready for their big move next week. The movers are arriving next week and they will be off to the next town over. I think the biggest adjustment will be for Nina and Alex who will be adapting to a new school with a very different social/class structure. It seems to be bringing the two little siblings closer though which is a beautiful thing of course.

I will keep all of your posted on how it all progresses for the Parsons.

Love,

Sandra

A Very Merry Christmas

Dear Family,

We have eaten through our first part of the Christmas holiday. Last night, we had our traditional Christmas Eve dinner with all the fish. My grandmother still insists on making most of the food - although she is limping along with great difficulty. But cooking is her passion so there is no stopping her even though she can barely walk. She also made her usual Christmas cookies. So here we are now on Christmas morning drinking coffee and trying to avoid eating our christmas cookies so that I don't go into a sugar induced coma. Sid is busily working on a bringing back to life a medicine cabinet we had hanging in one of our bathrooms. I have to admit it looks rather pathetic at this point but could POTENTIALLY be a collector's item - if you can ever restore its retro beauty. Sid loves this item but all I can see is a rusty broken up medicine cabinet.

The Good Life

Hello All,

Kay I think you better listen to your little sister. You really need to go home now, your siblings obvioulsy can not go on without you. :-) See isn't it nice to be loved.

Is there snow at the farm at all - I guess not really. It must look so pretty out there when it is snowing. How are things on the farmstead. Wish the farm was closer so that I could just decompress from the intensity of work and the city for a few days. Hope you are all keeping nice and warm in the house, and are you roasting chestnuts out there? Chestnuts are my favorite, sometimes I actually them as my dinner. Pretty strange huh?

Wow, I hope to be able to spend a week at the farm this summer - what a nice break that would be -aaahh!

Hope everyone is having a nice Christmas season so far. We will be in touch.

Love,

Sandra

Friday at Last

Hello Family,

I am so glad it is Friday but of course we have lots of home projects to do so it may not be as restful as we would like. Luckily though the University gives us a week off which is such a gift (between Christmas and New Years) and this year we even get Christmas Eve off. Yeppie. We are so spoiled here in a way - just in a way though.

In other ways, well.......that's a discussion for another day.

Love the photos of Tory's party. So what exactly is the Pomegranate party, is it really a gathering where that lovely fruit is served??? I love pomegranates - how they look and taste so that is always a great theme for me.

There is definitely some kind of "urban chic" thing going with all of you in the photo. You all look so fashionably urban and cool. Can't quite pin down what it is. Everyone looks so fit etc... it must be that amazing Northwest air. Jessica is looking rather slim, or I should say even more slim than usual - is she running marathons with you Diana? Have you finally converted her to the obsessive world of exercise. By the way, I finally came across something that explains us folks who dedicate inordinate hours to exercising. It is not that we always love the way we feel while we are exercising- because it really is painful some times. It is that we HATE the way we feel when we DO NOT exercise. That pretty much summarizes it for me.

Love to you all,

Sandra

Thankful in Philadelphia

Hello Family,

Sid and I really wanted to get ourselves together before the day started today to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving. Not surprisingly, it was the usual rush that it normally is for us on holidays, and so are good wishes are coming to you late.

The morning started with an ambituous run. I have a friend who always talks me into doing a benefit run on Thanksgiving. So off I headed this morning for a 6-mile uphill run. At one point, I really thought I was going to pass out. I kept telling or screaming to myself (in my own head - not out load I promise) that it is mind over matter. Oh boy it took every ounce of strength I had.

But finally we did and when I reached the finish line I was so so happy and felt wonderful, I won't tell you about the terrible aches I had - I am ignoring all that.

Sid was resting in the nice warm house when I walked in from the run. I was chilled to the bone. The air was so damp and it was precipitating outside but no real discernable rain, snow. etc.... I wanted to come in the house, take a bath and rest. But being that it is a holiday, I had to finish preparing the side dishes I offered to bring for my sister's dinner. It all worked out and we got the card loaded etc...

Part of our holiday celeration included singing "happy birthday" to Sid. It was a real event as Nina pulled out her guitar and played a nice melodic version of HB. We all sang out of tune and I am glad we don't get recorded when my family sings.

We are grateful for many things even though there have been many moments of feeling sad and out of sorts this year. One special event that made us really grateful this year is our little drama with one of our lovely cats. Luna - what she is missing in grace and coordination she makes up in cuteness, had a very eventful day last week. She and Zuki love to go outside on our back balcony and gaze at the stars, the moon and moving squirrels. They often jump up on the ledge of our fence that surrounds our back balcony. We usually keep our eye on them but we can't do it every minute.

Therefore, on this blessed day, I went out on the balcony after they had both been out there about 10-15 minutes without neither sid nor I keeping watch. When I opened the door, Zuki came running back in and Luna was not in sight. I took a quick look three floors below me just to make sure she did not end up down there. We do this every time we look for them and don't see them immediately. Every other time that we have done this, they had already returned inside the house. But on this day, when I peaked down she was actually down there sitting on all fours and letting out a meager meow. She was crying. With my heart racing I ran down there and hysterically infomed Sid as I rushed out the door to rescue Luna. I was tearning down the fire exit stairs and scooped her up. She was so terrified and I think so relieved that someone picked her up. She had a little cut on her lip and was limping a bit. She was walking with a limp and moving very slowly. I immediately called someone at the Vet School (the Clinician on Emergency Services). Luckily I had just spent lots of time with him a few days prior as I was helping him on an employee case he had. So he was not hesitant to discuss this with me in detail and make suggestions. It's not easy to get clinicians to committ to any real discussion without seeing the "patient"

In the end Luna was fine. Sid watched over her all day and comforted her - wrapped her in blankets, made sure she stayed in her little bed. He nursed her for the entire day. The next day she was almost back to normal. Thank goodness. So you see we really have something special to be thankful for this holiday. Not that we ever took our precious Luna for granted but now we really appreciate her more than ever. Her little brother Zuki was amazing through all this. He tucked himself in next to Luna in the little bed, licked her all over and put his paw around her. He did that several times the day she was hurt. How sweet is that!

So you are having SNOW in the northwest. Has the snow reached Oregon? Diana, that is another wonderful photo of you. Did Jessica rescue from having to make the turkey dinner - did you get to relax? So nice to have a cook around isn't it?

Love to you all and hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Mouths Watering

My goodness, I have never seen such a perfect looking tart. That is beautiful and looks delicious.

Diana, you are so funny - that is hysterical and we are taking you very seriously. We will be sure to not cross your path as you indulge in those deserts. So who is eating those scrumptious looking deserts. Do Murray and Nicole have to constantly sample those calorie less deserts!

Sid and I were debating who should do some of the home projects that we so desperately need to do in our condo. It is very difficult to keep these old places (that of course are full of character) looking spiffy! Sid of course thinks we can do everything, and I think I should clean out savings and get it done. Well just kidding on that one, but my goodness it sure is tempting to have contractors do everything. Not to mention of course that if you get a really good professional person in - the work can look spectacular. I am not as confident in my own ability to install base boards, light fixtures, drywalling........ Sid has much enthusiasm about what the two of us can accomplish.

:-) :-) The problem of course is always time when you work as many hours as I do.;.//.uu

My sister and family will be moving to a new home soon. The house is not the mansion they live in now and will be much more manageable. In her current home she faces the same "old world charm" issues that we face here to put it nicely. My sister and I compare notes a lot about how energized we feel by the endless projects we should both be doing in the house. Being that the Parsons have the largest house in their current town of Merchantville, they have accumulated so much stuff. The mere thought of packing the contents of their house is enough to give you indigestion or insomnia.

My sister is all for getting a big dumpster and hauling half of their "valuables" away in the trash. George is a little more - well let's say conservative with getting rid of things. But Rossana and I did have the brilliant idea of having a yard sale to make money from all the junk we need to sell. I could not round up much junk - I think because I was really sick for two days before the yard sale and just did not have the energy to organize it all. My sister has no shortage of things to sell.

I have to admit that neither of us were very organized and so we did not put up signs or advertise the yard sale. Along with the complete lack of organization, we could not seem to get started until

Noon. So Nina happily put up the ONE sign announcing that there is a yard sale in front of the house. Passers by walked along the sidewalk and meagerly looked over but very FEW stopped to look. Is it us???

We diligently stood around for 4 hours, maybe 5. I think my sister managed to make $15.00. It was rather pathetic, but still lots of fun anyway. The most interesting item to be sold was a medicine cabinet that was really neat. It is made of metal and about six feet high. It is an old fashioned lock up cabinet where George's father (also a DOC.) used to lock up the medications. It is probably worth something nowadays. One woman came by and offered $25 for it but she could not carry it into her house. My sister and I enthusiastically offered George up to drive it over and unload the next day - when he was not working. Of course George thought this was a loosing deal and said that was ridiculous and we need to find another buyer for it.

Then a woman came by when we were wrapping it up for the day. She said she was an artist and had a floral arrangement business and she took a lot of interest in the cabinet. My sister was in the house and so I was the seller for the moment. I told her the cabinet is going for $50.00. Alex then inserted that "Daddy said it has to be sold for $75 or $100. The woman just smiled at him and was probably thinking "what do you know, you little brat." Then my sister comes walking out of the house and I start telling her as she walks toward us that this person is interested in buying and I told her I quoted $50. And my sister was so focused on getting rid of it and trying to be nice to the woman, I don't think she heard me and said, "oh we are selling this for $25." I looked kind of stupid or greedy, don't you think. And interestingly enough it seems that for the rest of the conversation, the woman was talking to my sister and pretty much ignored me. Hmmm do you think she maybe did not like me as much. So they worked out the details of when the buyer can pick this up etc...which would be two days away because she needed to get her in-laws' van.

The next morning George said with great puzzlement, "why are we selling the medicine cabinet, that is a really neat piece." He had first suggested that it be sold.

Well I think what we learned from this is that my sister and I probably should not be selling things - we were not very good at it. But it was really a lot of fun, laughing at ourselves as we stood outside on a beautiful Fall day. The kids enjoyed it too and they probably also learned that having a yard sale is .....well.....I don't know that I can even say what they learned.

Well I will keep you all posted on how we progress or more likely DON'T Progress on our home projects.

KC, I am impressed that you took in those dogs and as if you did not have your hands full before now there is no debating it. Enjoy them and what a great thing to do. I am sure you and Tom will love them like crazy as you try to bring the precious little being back to good health.

Love to you all and hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Sandra

Frank Agostino - the featured Designer

here is the website of where his designs are exhibited

http://www.thegalleriesatmoore.org/

http://www.thegalleriesatmoore.org/site/exhibitions (this has more specific info) on it. I am just bragging about the beautiful clothes that my mother made. Hee Hee! Sorry!

Thanks for all the family updates

Hello Family,

Our condolences to Bill for the loss of his uncle. Uncle sounds like he was an admirable man. Also seems like he had a full life, which is always good to hear about people who pass away.

Other than the sad news, you certainly all have interesting things to report - and thankfully it is all good stuff. Sounds like there will be a new family member appearing in about nine month. Horaay! KC, I bet you are thrilled beyond words. And thanks for your lovely message last week when you called us to say hello and tell us you were heading down to Mexico. See what I mean about interesting and exciting lives.

Diana dear, wouldn't that man standing beside Jessica be Michelle Obama's brother?? How did you capture him for that photo? Although he certainly looks like a friendly face, it probably wasn't too difficult. And I see that Jessica's Halloween costume was A RESIDENT of THE REPUBLIC of EUGENE :-) :-) :-) Jessica, you really pulled it off well, you would fit right in with that oufit. Hee hee!

Sounds like Kay is having a well-deserved good time in California. Kay do you miss Oregon? Are you having good weather and staying away from the Oregon rain. Actually I don't know if it even is raining in OR right now???

And the other day I got an invite from Judi Myers to her facebook. What fun! I don't do much facebook stuff but I do like to check up on people I know to see if they posted any interesting photos etc.... When I did go to Judi's facebook, I saw a picture of Tory appearing to be on a Greek beach. How lovely!

The most exciting thing going on here is that the designer (Frank Agostino) that my mom has worked for in the past 30 years was invited to exhibit at Moore College of Art ( a well regarded Art School) and so last week my sister and I pathetically looked for something fashionable to wear in order to attend his opening/reception etc.... It was really fun. And in the end, even with our best efforts, there was nothing discernably fashionable about either of us. But at least we did not embarass my mother. Actually, Agostino designs are rather conservative but very stylish (no boring suits though) so you don't feel that you have to be loud in your "fashion sense." His customer base is made of mostly wealthy women who are not 18 years old weighing 65 pounds. He gets big bonus points for that. Although at the reception, there were certainly those who obviously have made "medical interventions" to look younger. Definitely a great place to observe.

But above all else, I have to brag about the craftsmanship and that is where my mother comes in. His designs could never work if my mother wasn't with him all these years pulling togther all his crazy ideas and sewing them into a beautiful garment that a human being can actually wear. Her sewing and patience isn't something you come across very often. He has been so lucky to have her. My only regret is that her name was not mentioned at any point that evening :-( boo hoo But of course I know she is very much appreciated by many. The customers floating around at the reception seem to love her my mother as they all enthusiastically approached her, "Ohhh Anna Maria......" I never heard her name spoken so much in my life. She was like a celebrity. We all need our moment of fame right? God knows she deserves it.

Hope all is well with all of you and you are always in my thoughts. Thanks for keeping bopcha.com alive!!

It is a warming and welcoming place for me to go when I want to get away from work or whatever else is going on (like paying bills)

Love to all of you,

Sandra
