The $900 Excuse

Hello,

Yes indeed the car requires us spending $900 to repair so I can get it back this weekend. Although I am awfully afraid that by the time I go pick it up, it is going to be more than $1000. They always manage to slip in some additional costs. What timing though. It is awfully suspicious isn't it that my car broke down the day before the races in NJ??? It is really ridiculous and I actually was prepared to go, I had even printed out the directions from mapquest.

The troubles started yesterday when I was driving out to the large animal facilities for meetings. It is located about 70 miles away from the city. I was driving on I-95 which is a fast-moving interstate highway. My engine light and thermostat light went on and the car was overheating. It was also slowing down to about 20 miles an hour while all the cars around me are going 70 MPH. It was indeed scary. As soon as I realized that I was never going to make it to my destination, I headed back toward the city, but neverthless I had to drive over an ominous bridge where again cars are moving very fast, and there was no shoulder to pull over to and drive slowly. I just figured I would put my flashing lights on and go slow. I just prayed that even though it was pouring rain and visibility was diminished behind all the fogging windows, no one behind me would slam into me. I tried to think really hard about what a smarter person would do in this case, and I just couldn't think of any alternative. There is no way I could pull over and wait for triple A - there was no space to do that. Finally, after slow perservance I very painfully and slowly got to my destination (the repair garage). I always feel like I am being ripped off when I go there, but my choice was limited. I was so relieved to get out of the car and just walk back over to my office.

I really enjoyed walking in the freezing rain to my office, because it was so much better than being stuck in my dying car. But in the end, all this is to say that we could not help Tom out. It's not a good feeling because I know he was probably counting on us.

Sorry Tom and KC, we owe you big time. However, we are planning on going out there tomorrow. Of course, I am still waiting for the auto repair shop to call me back.

Oh the excitement. Sounds like everyone is busy and active. Diana, absolutely the Beavers need to take off when you are not available. They really do need you!! Too bad the mediation did not get the result you wanted. Does mediation work very often? I was really into mediation some years back, I thought it was the answer to all conflict, but I don't know how much it works in legal cases, you would be a better judge of that.

Bopcha, all those vegetables just sound so wonderful. We do not readily have good artichokes out here on the East Coast. I absolutely love artichokes because they are so versatile. You can do a million things with them (not that I really know how to do so many things with them, but I know there are lots of dishes made with them). One day I was watching a TV program that I often follow which is called "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmerman." He travels all over the world reporting on all kinds of strange foods - which sort of serves as a cultural education through the foods that are eaten in a given place. One day he was reporting from Sicily Italy and he covered the "Annual Artichoke Festival." I have never seen artichokes prepared in so many different ways. It was amazing. They even had artichoke ice cream. Anyway, whenever there is a mention of artichokes, I think of that festival and how much fun it would be to attend.

I guess lastly I should add a cute comment/question that litte Alex (7 year old nephew) brought up yesterday. He

said to my sister, "Mommy, what time was it when the clock was invented?" I was telling Bopcha that earlier this morning. That comment is almost as interesting as when he said to his Dad one day after kindergarten "Daddy, I don't think our teacher is too smart because every day she asks us what day it is." That's a classic. I will remember that into old age.

:-) :-)

Much love to all and again so sorry to KC and Tom. I am crossing my fingers that my car will be back up and running tomorrow.

Sandra

Poor Tom is on his own!

Sandra's car "suspiciously' broke down yesterday and is now in the process of being repaired. Hmmmmmmm. Poor Tom is on his own. We will try to make the drive out tomorrow so we can at least say Hi.

Kay, if you want to look at Diana's lovely mug you have to go back to the date it happened - Sept 12th (look at the top right of the Blog you should see a calendar).

Love Sid

Friday @ the Gleaners

We have soooo many green peppers, yellow and red, also, long skinny ones and short fat ones. Also, big huge turnips, and young turnips with the leaves on. They tell me turnip green are really special. Also, potatoes from the OSU potato farms, and apples, big red ones and pale yellow ones, and little red ones. Lets see if I can remember what else!

Also, lots of new help. It seems some of the help is sick, or something. They say, ask Virginia where she wants you to put those melons, those two artichokes, that handful of onions, those kiwis, the egg plants, some are skinny and some fat. I keep thinking of Tom and those two dogs going to New Jersey, and KC on her way south with other dogs. I think the two youngest dogs. And did Kazan finallly make the plunge to create a new family of pups. Too much to keep track of.

One of our tried and true workers was sick today, (I always speculate it is the flu), but I think he had some , or one) tooth pulled. It isn't too cold today. I need to go and get some soap for the dishes in the sink, I know I have the dishwasher, but some tag ends like plastic containers I just wash in a mild soap.

By for now. LOve, Bopcha

Balloon

What excitement in Colorado - boy in balloon, boy not in balloon ...

I told JB about her Aunt KC's flu warning. She went to work anyway. She did not have a fever yesterday, so we are hoping she did not/does not have it.

Mother, I forgot to tell you earlier, but the watermelon from the Gleaners was really good! And so was the teeny one from your garden! We sauted some of the yellow summer squash, and I put the rest in a salad yesterday. Yummmm! The tomatoes are ripening on the window sill. Every day a few more are missing, so I know Jess is taking them for her lunch as they ripen.

Saturday night is a fund raising auction for the MI boys basketball team. Tory is coming! She is such a good sport. It cost her fifty personal bucks to attend - and she was willing to do it. What a nice child you raised, KC. Lucky for Murray and Nikole their schedule prevents such mandatory appearances.

I still have a slight bump in my cheek and a slight bruise beneath it. Still, it is so much better than before ...

I am so busy it isn't even funny. Thank goodness the Beavers have the week off. They depend on my support, and I am stretched way too thin this weekend to have given them what they typically demand of me.

I'm so popular!

Dee

H1N1?

Poor JB - according to reports, H1N1 hitting young women particularly hard. Suggest she consider that she may have H1N1 and that she respond agressively, whether symptoms are mild or not: lots of fluids, lots of rest, some exercise and moving about, and of course, meds that help handle the symptoms (e.g., Theraflu, vitimen C). Also critical -- not to expose others. H1N1 reportedly extremely contagious, and although frequently mild, not always. If you recall, a woman working in my building died from H1N1 in July....

No Settlement

Case didn't settle.

JB was sick yesterday with a slight fever and aches. Eeeeek! Hope it isn't any kind of flu.

I am sleepy.

Love,

Dee

Fall, Maybe Early Winter

Hey Kay - what fun things ongoing out west in California!! Love to all from their Aunt KC!! I had lots of fun at OTS--lots of stress as well, but a momorable experience in retrospect. Dee's pictures of her face on still there, they've simply slipped to the next page. Scoll all the way down to the end the this page and you'll see there's a link that says "next page" of about 89 pages. Her pictures are not buried too deeply--the first or second page I think.

Tom's in Missouri, destination New Jersey. He expects to drive another 600 or 700 miles today, leaving him only 400-500 on Friday--a short drive relataively speaking.

The weather during the races will be terrible--two nor'easters (or something like that) will be present, dumping rain and wind on the participants heads. Tom said to tell Sid and Sandra he relieves them of any obligation to attend. He says there will be plenty of folks to help out. He's love to see them but not at the risk of them being miserable.

Good luck in mediation Dee!!

Ridgecrest

Hello from the high desert. We had very high winds yesterday.

Tina has her 46th birthday on Friday, Alexis has her first birthday on Saturday and Theresa leaves for OCS in Rhode Island on Saturday. I will be heading home on Monday morning.

Having a great visit and found out that Crystal and Allen are really, really good at Scrabble.

Tomorrow Steph and I are heading for California City to see Randys house.

Wanted to show Gina pictures of Diana's face but can't locate the pictures, where are they now located?

Mediation Today

I have an all-day mediation today, beginning at 9:30 a.m. I will be SHOCKED and THRILLED if this case settles. We are going to be working with a mediator Kay is familiar with, but not me. She is supposed to be good. We will put her to the test!

Well, I guess I'd better catch my bus downtown. JB has the day off today. When Bill and I left the house, she was snoozing on the couch.

Love,

Dee

Chill in the Air

It is starting to become chilly in the Pacific Northwest. We are throwing our coats on to dash out to the car to drive to work, and the throw blankets are starting to get used again. Brrrr.....

Not much news of interest here. Noah and JB were both at the house Sunday afternoon and it was nice to have them hanging around. Noah's wrist is healing slowly. He is still wearing a brace, but the hand doctor says it is making progress. Jessica is focused on work and Gavin.

Gavin is getting ready to launch the high school basketball season (after T.Giving). I am the designated game photographer for the on-line newsletter he just started. I do not have a camera that will take photos in a gym, but Jessica thinks hers might be able to because it has a rapid-fire lens like KC has. I will do some test runs and see if I can at least get some photos of boys shooting free throws.

I am at work so I guess I should do some.

Love,

Dee

Your kitten is adorable!

What cute photos!

Back at work after a wonderful trip to Corvallis. Go Beavs!

Love,

Dee

Clouds!

Scroll down to Bopcha sitting on the green tractor in front of KC and Tom's residence. Do you see the little white cloud in the blue sky?

Now go to Earthfiles and scroll down to the white cloud in the sky. In the upper right hand corner is a saucer, barely visible.

Do you think ................?

Love, Bopcha

Our "Cat and Bath" house.

I figured I would join the club of "Pet Mania".

She actually gets a bath about once every two weeks. Amazingly tolerant.

She is fascinated by the tub!

Do people and their pets reflect each others' personalities?

blog

I tried posting a couple of times - once from my computer and once from Bopchas and thought the problem was me. Another case of Sid trying to drive me crazy.

Off to Ridgecrest tomorrow. Judi is dog sitting for me. Ramone is having problems with his rear legs related to his spine. They would like me to go to Portland and have an MRI done on him and then surgery. The cost of the MRI alone is horrible and I am sure the surgery is off the wall. They did do an x-ray and you can see the problem but the MRI would determine what disc they would need to operate on. He is on pain killers and anti-inflammatories. He is 11 headed for 12 and so I don't think I will have surgery done. As long as I can keep him pain free and he can get around, we will be okay. When he can't get up and/or is in pain, I will have him put to sleep. I must say that decision is really really hard as all you animal lovers can imagine. So this is all I can say about it at this time.

I am going to CA to say goodby to Theresa who leaves for OCS on Saturday and Alexis has her 1st birthday on Saturday so I am taking care of two beloved grandchildren at the same time.

Diana's face does look better but she has a rather large lump still on her cheek. My deck is looking rather nice if I do say so.

Aloha talk to you all when I return.
